Video Analysis

I decided to do the song Untitled #1 or Vaka as my video analysis. This song was named after the drummer step daughter. I chose this video because I find that it has a great deal of symbolism. In my opinion this video is meant to represent nuclear Apocalypse or atomic war. There are a few symbols that would give me reason to believe this. The first symbol was the faculty of the school inspecting their ears and mouths and then the children getting ready with many layers of clothing along with ominous gas masks. This symbolizes the getting ready for war. When the children get to the "playground" it is covered in black ash and it is falling form the sky like snow. This is also a sign of an atomic bomb. They play in the ash as if it were snow. They then begin rough housing and pushing each other around. They push this one girl whose gas mask comes off. She falls to the ground and the other children come together around her as she slowly closes her eyes. I felt that this video was extremely impacting and a good way of getting a point across.

Comic Book Write Up

Comic Book Write-Up
Our story starts with three characters: Judah, Gethsemane, and Shalem. They all have different problems and issues that need to be resolved in their lives. Judah is outwardly strong, but inwardly he is quite weak. Gethsemane is very shy and only wants to conform to the world, and Shalem is insecure and helps everyone around him in an attempt to feel better about himself. They never really meet as in the beginning of our comic they end up crashing into each other in a car collision. One by one the characters wake up in a new place that is mysterious, abnormal, and seems impossible. We follow each one in their journey through these places and what they get out of it.. Gethsemane awakens to find several women surrounding her. She doesn't have a clue where she is and as she looks down her belly has a bulge. When she stands up she feels like fainting. When she asks why she finds out that she is pregnant and 9 months at that. In this world, almost everyone is pregnant because a baby is born three days after its conception, and all female babies are kept, and only one male baby within a generation is kept. The males are all killed and eaten except for the one chosen to be the next alpha male. Gethsemane finds herself in this world and is a spectacle because she is pregnant already. They find out that she is pregnant with a boy, and she knows he is going to be killed, so she must escape before it happens, but they find her very special and decide that her son will be the alpha male of the generation. They try to force her to stay and she is treated as a queen. Due to Gethsemane's background she is not used to dealing with being the centre of attention. Here she will confront her fears and find what her life had been missing. Judah finds himself in a world where everyone is physically weak, and strength is scoffed at. He, being a strong military man, is somewhat shunned. He cannot get the attention of ladies like he is used to and he has no friends. All he wants to do is fit in. He slowly starts to get into their culture and over time transforms into someone who does not care about physical appearance. He finds his true inner being and feels fulfilled for once in his life. He no longer has to put on a tough guy face and he finally finds love instead of some "hot chick." A women sees him for who he really is and he is forced to face his fears and let down his guard. To be continued..

She is the type of person who hides her true beauty inside and out with clothes and lack of socialization. She gets up, gets ready for work, feeds her dog August and then makes her way off to work. When at work she goes straight to her desk does extra work for everybody becauase they push her around and then she stays later than everybody else. After this she goes home, runs on her treadmill and then sits on the couch with her dog eating popcorn watching a sappy romance. This is the daily routine of Gethsamane and it does not change. Her fears of standing out in society are confronted when she comes to the other world. When she comes to the other world, she is a spectacle; therefore she must conquer her fears and feelings about standing out.

Song Analysis

For my song analysis I chose the song Glosoli. This is one of my favorite songs so I am very happy to be able to do this song for my analysis. The way in which all of the instruments, including vocals, are arranged in this song gives you this calming feeling that makes you feel relaxed at the beginning and this emotional one at the end. At the beginning of this song it is very calming with a subtle drum beat that continues throughout the song. This keeps the feeling of the song up until you get to the build up. The vocals throughput the entire song act as an instrument as apposed to a prominent voice. This adds to the mood and theme of the song. As the song progresses the drums get louder speeding up the pace of the song a little. This builds you up to the big finale. When you finally reach the build up it is very emotionally impacting because you knew it was coming the whole time. This gives the song an element of suspense. At the end of the song you here virtually silence for a few seconds and then a light little chime that sounds almost like a child's toy. This gives you time to think about what you have just heard and intemperate it in your own way before the next song starts.

Album Cover Analysis

Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust

For my album cover analysis I chose to do the album cover for Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust. I picked this one because in my opinion it had the most meaning. When this album was released the cover kind of freaked people out. Some people even went as far as thinking that Sigur Ros had discovered nudist colonies. This album is their latest album and is known for it's stylistic differences in comparison to Sigur Ros's previous albums. It is known to be a "happier" more upbeat version of Sigur Ros. I personally think that people weren't understanding the album cover because they were taking it at face value. Instead of look for a deeper meaning and connnecting it to the differences on the album. I personally think that the whole idea of the nude people running on the front cover was sympbolic for freedom. To rid yourself of your clothing or what hides who you truley are is to be ultimatley free, and the running just adds to the concept. The men have been thought to be the four members of the band. On the cover it shows them running accross a highway. This is my opinion is a sign of freedomn rebellion, and lack of caring. I think that the album cover represents thier stylistic differences in this album perfectly. It was ment to connect to a new style of Sigur Ros which is more loose, happy, care-free, and posative.

Sigur Ros Biography

Although Sigur Ros is a more recent band that became popular in the late 90’s their sound has blown away millions of people. They have a unique sound that anyone can listen to. From kids to teens to adults, they impress people of all ages. The band is known as post-rock band. They are known for their lead singers falsetto voice wich her uses the majority of the time. This adds to the sound of their music. The band combined their homeland language of Icelandic with their own language to come up with Hopelandic. This also adds to the uniqueness of Sigur Ros. The band started in their teenage year’s as a trio including guitarist and vocalist Jon Thor Birgisson, bassist Georg Holm, and drummer Agust Gunnarsson. They were three very talented young men who when tied together came up with the beginning of what Sigur Ros is proud to call their sound. They released their first album in 1997 names Von. (Hope) Kjartan Sveinsson joined the band as a keyboardest and was a major part of their heavily string based album Agaetis Byrjun. (An Alright Start)

The album Agaetis Byrjun
(An Alright Start) released in 1999 made them very popular in their homeland and earned them platinum status in sales. The drummer Agust Gunnarsson departed after this album, but was very quickly replaced by drummer Orri Pall DyRason. Their song consisted of a huge hit Svefn-G-Englar. This album spread by word of mouth over the next two years. Many of the songs from this album can be found in Tv series such as 24, CSI, CSI Miami. Some songs from this album have also appeared in awad winning movies such as; Immortal, Mysterious Skin, or The Girl in The Café. I personally think that this album is amazing , but not my favorite album. This brought Sigur |Ros into the light and hlped them on their way to the famous band that they are.

The EP Rimur was released in 2001. The six songs on this EP were a way of chritianing their new studio that they had built for them. This was a very personal album that only had 1000 copies given out in 2001 in a blank paper case. The entire album featured a true Icelandic fisherman Steindor Andersen. The album is mainly poetry. Icelandic poetry is called rimur, hence the name. Not many people know about this album , but it is very interesting. The only way to get these songs are to download them. And finding them is extremely difficult.

In 2003 they were working with radiohead to compose some music for Merce Cunningham’s dance piece “Split Ends.” They ended up putting the music onto an album naming it “Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do.” Radiohead’s contirubution was never published.

In 2005 they released the album Takk. Takk is my personal favorite album seeing that I like almost every song on it. It has two of my favorite songs Hoppopolla, and Glosoli which were two of their biggest hits. Hoppipolla has appeared in many movies, shows, and BBC world news. It has been in recent movies such as Children of Men and Slumdog Millionaire. This album brought the band Sigur Ros to worldwide fame. They are well known in the United States and here in Canada.

In 2006 Sigur Ros finished a huge worldwide tour with multiple stops in Europe and the US. They played a headlien show at the Hollywood Bowl, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan. When the band returned from this tour they played a series of free outdoor shows in their homeland for two months. During these shows there was film taken which then turned into a DVD named Heima.

In August 2007, a limited DVD+CD edition of the 2002 soundtrack to the documentary Hlemmur was released. The DVD Heima was released prior to this which was a live documentary of their icland outdoor tour and a look into some of their unreleased songs. It is a great DVD and I would suggest taking a look at it.

Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust which translates to “With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly” was their fifth studio recorded album which was released on June 23, 2008. This album is said to be stylistically different with fewer strings and more guitar. This is not necessarily a bad thing as it just widens the audience even more. The last track on the album titled “All Alright” is the first English song ever released by Sigur Ros. The band have been announced as a headlining act for the 2008 Splendour in the Grass Festival in Byron Bay, Australia, Latitude Festival 2008 and the 2008 La Route du Rock Festival in St Malo, France. In addition, the band performed a late-night set at the 2008 Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, where they blew a speaker at the end of their second song. In the Fall of 2008 they started their Autumn tour that ended in September in their homeland.

Individual Members

Jon Thor Birgisson - He is known for his Flasetto voice, his use of a cello bow on his guitar, and his openly being gay. He is also blind in one eye and a vegetarian. His significant other Alex Somers and Himself collaborate on their own side project that they do for fun with ambient music. Alex Somers is responsible for most of the graphic design of Sigur Ros. Prior to Sigur Ros he was lead for a band called the “Bee Spiders.” They could be compared to the Smashing Pumpkins. Prior to this band he also fronted another band called “Stoned.”

Georg Holm - He is the most fluent in English and is the cofounder of the band Sigur Ros. One of the songs is named after his step daughter and is a quite amazing bassist. He has been with the band since the beginning and is contempt to be until the end.

Kjartan Sviensson - He was not a part of Sigur Ros in the beginning, but was easily accepted into the group as a keyboardist. He plays many instruments such as; the oboe, tin whistle, flute. He also plays the guitar. He is a composer and has composed many of the string arrangments for Sigur Ros. He is an amazing musician and a very important addition to Sigur Ro.

Orri Pall DyRason - Replaced the drummer Agust Gunnarsson after he left the band. He has done 5 amazing albums with Sigur Ros and loves being a part of everything. He also named the song Vaka after his daughter. He is an exceptional drummer and was easily accepted into the band.

MyTop5Fav.Bands VIDEOS COMING SOON!!
keepvid.com is down

I personally listen to music anywhere from 1-5 hours a day. I listen to it when I wake up in the morning, take a shower, eat my breakfast, get ready, and drive to school. I listen to music every chance I get. So when I was asked to come up with a list of 5 of my favourite bands it was very difficult. Regardless I have accumulated 5 bands that I absolutely adore and listen to on a daily basis. I will tell you a little bit about each band, why I personally like enjoy them, which song I believe best describes them , and things that make them stand out among other bands or artists.

5. Lifehouse

Lifehouse is a band that started in L.A. They are known as a Christian band whose song writing ability is astounding. The lead singer Jason Wade started self-teaching himself guitar and writing lyrics and melodies since he was 15. He got together with a friend who plays bass and a drummer. Together they played in the school auditorium every Friday. Word of mouth got them noticed and brought them to where they are today.

I like them personally because of the emotional impact there lyrics have on not only me but millions of people. They are clean cut and they’re sound is tight. I listen to them quite often and find myself in and out of stages where I listen to them non-stop.

I think that the song “storm” best describes the band. Although this song is not they’re best in my opinion it shows how much talent they had even at such a young age. The song “storm” was written when Jason was only 16 years old yet is very impacting.

There are a few things that make them stand out among other bands. The first thing is their style. They are very mild and reach out to a more religious audience. They often are asked to play for youth conventions because of their ability to have such a great sound with such a strong message. The second thing that makes them stand out is their severe impact emotionally. They’re songs are about love, loss and change. They’re songs have helped thousands of people deal with problems in their own lives. If you are ever in need of a good cry they have many songs that can easily impact you in that way. Here is “storm” by Lifehouse. Enjoy!

4. Within Temptation

Within Temptation is a Dutch rock band who falls more or less into the category of symphonic metal. The band consists of 5 males and 1 female. Sharon den Adel is the only woman and is the lead vocalist. They mesh heavy metal, choir, and opera into one amazing sound. They started playing in music festivals and became the most famous heavy metal band from Holland.

I personally enjoy Within Temptation because they have a unique sound that is extremely overwhelming. They are amazing instrumentally and vocally creating a sound that is different than anything else.

I think that the song “our solemn hour” best describes Within Tempatation. When performing this song live they usually bring a full orchestra and choir. Although it is not my personal favourite, I think it best describes the band’s style of music.

The thing that really makes Within Temptation stand out among other bands not only to me, but thousands of others is it’s live performances. This band has one of the biggest shows for heavy metal. They take a full orchestra and choir along with them for every show and tour. Their show has a tonne of special effects giving it a different feel. The special effects add to the feeling, making the experience that much more enjoyable. They have fans that would do anything to even see them. This is their song “our solemn hour.” Enjoy!

3. Imogen Heap

She is pretty much a one woman band. Her along with her MacBook go up onstage and blow away the audience. She is an extremely well known artist, and has a contract with the producers of the Narnia movies. She came up with several songs that were incorporated within both movies. Her voice and musical ability accented the movie beautifully. She went to a music school that was attached to her own highschool. She then entered the Southern London College at age 15 with her classical training.

I personally like Imogen Heap because her voice is very calming. I usually listen to her when I am having a shower or fallign asleep. I personally like voices that are not generic or similar to others and Imogen Heap’s voice is very unique.

I think that the song “hide and seek” best describes her. It is the style that she sings most often. The thing that stands out about Imogen Heap is her persistance in being a leader and her outstanding voice. She is unique in many aspects and she is good at it. She is a very talented woman and that is how she gets to number 3 on my top 5 list. She is the type of voice that you hear and you know exactly who it is. Each band I have chosen have this exact quality and this is one of the most important reasons that I have chosen them. This is Imogen Heap’s “hide and seek.”

2. Anberlin
They are a christian rock band from Orlando Fl. Their name has NOTHING to do with Berlin or Germany. Stephen Christian is the lead singer and is very into charity. A popular story of his background was that he was once homeless himself. He is responsible for writing the majority of the lyrics. They just released their first mainstream album called “New Surrender.”

The thing that I like the best about them is their guitar riffs, lyrics, and vocals.

The song Fin* is describes them pretty well. It is by far my favorite song of theirs. They changed things up a little for this song but it is still a pretty good exampl of their style.

The thing that stands out the most about Anberlin is the Vocals. Even if you don't know Anberlin that well if you hear his voice you know that it is Stephen Christian's. His voice is very unique, distinctive, and smooth. It is one of my favorite male vocals. Here is Fin*. Enjoy!

1. Sigur Ros

Sigur Ros is By far my favorite band. Although I have just recently discovered them it is a new found favorite. They are a band from Iceland consisting of four people. Jon Thor Birgisson is the lead guitarist and vocalist. They all contribute to wrting the songs. They have combined icelandic and their own language to create hopelandic. The lead singer sings in falsetto for the majority of the time which is unusual, but sounds amazing.

The songs that I think best describe them are Svefn-G-Englar and hoppipolla.

The thing that makes Sigur Ros stand out the most among other bands is their overall sound. Sure knock off bands like The Album Leaf and The Parachute Band can open for them, but there is no other band that can truly be compared to sigur ros. Here is Svefn-G-Englar seeing as I already have Hoppipolla from a previous blog.
